August 29 is International Day against Nuclear Tests, which celebrated around the world. This date is special for our people. It is both tragedy and hope.
On this day, the first nuclear explosion was made on Kazakhstani soil in 1949. But it also the day of the closure of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site in 1991. This date is an important milestone in the history of Kazakhstan, which predetermined the nuclear-free choice of our country.
On this significant date, the East Kazakhstan Regional Library named after A.S. Pushkin prepared a literary exhibition-exposition "Kazakhstan - for a nuclear-free world." It acquaints readers with the history of the creation and closure of the test site, research in the field of ecology, the development of nuclear energy in the Republic of Kazakhstan, publications and works of fiction on this topic.
One of the first to protest against the continuation of nuclear tests at the Semipalatinsk test site was Keshrim Boztaev, an East Kazakhstan state and public figure. In his works: "Semipalatinsk test site", "August 29", "Man and Atom" for the first time truthfully tells about the activities of the test site, about the damage done and the struggle to close the test site.
Testing at the site has been going on since 1949, for more than forty years. In total, 468 nuclear explosions were carried out, including 125 atmospheric, 343 underground. More detailed information, chronology of events, memories of residents of the affected lands, research results are contained in the books "Delusions, lies and truth" by Bahia Achabarov, "Human consequences of nuclear weapons tests in Kazakhstan" by Kanat Kabdrakhmanov, "Long echo of nuclear tests" by Nigmet Zhotabaev.
The Nevada-Semipalatinsk movement, organized by the poet and public figure Olzhas Suleimenov, played a decisive role in the closure of the test site. The books "Olzhas Suleimenov of the series" Anegeli өmir "and" Conversations with Olzhas "tell the history of the movement and reveal the role of Olzhas Omarovich as its leader.
With the chapter "Kazakhstan: towards a nuclear-free future" Nursultan Abishevich begins his book "The Epicenter of the World", in it the First President's view of the events associated with the Semipalatinsk test site, memories, reflections, experiences. In the book "G-GLOBAL - the world of the XXI century" Elbasy reveals the theme of the Semipalatinsk test site in the light of modern realities.
With the closure of the test site in Kazakhstan, a new nuclear-free era for Kazakhstan began. It is described in the anthology of materials of the Kazakhstanskaya Pravda newspaper - "Kazakhstan: architecture of a nuclear-free world" - a kind of chronicle covering twenty years after the closure of the test site, and a collection of articles "Kazakhstan and the policy of nuclear non-proliferation."
Now the territory of the Semipalatinsk test site and the territory adjacent to the German woman are still under scientific supervision. The works of modern scientists and research results are collected in the series "Topical issues of radioecology in Kazakhstan". The National Nuclear Center in Kurchatov presented the library with a three-volume book entitled “Carrying out a complex of scientific, technical and engineering work for the safe commissioning of the former Semipalatinsk test site”.
